Frequently Asked Questions

How is an online class different from an in-person class?

While online weekly classes are very similar to in-person classes they do have some differences. When teaching in person it is easier to facilitate students working on multiple subject matters at once. When working online, all students will be drawing/painting the same subject. Whether a still life, landscape, or portrait each student will be emailed a reference photo as well has having a live view of the set up. Instructors will be logged into the meeting twice. One window will be of them, their palette, and their drawing/painting so you can follow along. The other window will be a live feed of the set up. We work together to make thumbnails, draw, mix color, and paint all at your own pace.

What is the mentorship program? How is it different from a weekly class?

The mentorship program is designed for anyone who would like to work one on one with a mentor and not in a group setting. Meet ups are scheduled at your convenience for 30 minutes up to 1 hour. In that time we can work on a specific project you have in mind, critique your work, troubleshoot any problems that may arise, or review your portfolio for college admissions. Weekly classes are guided in a group setting whereas, mentorship meetings are one on one with your instructor/mentor.

What is the difference between a weekly class and a workshop?

Weekly classes will meet every week and last anywhere from 5 to 10 weeks. Workshops are typically one day for 3-4 hours. Workshops will be an introduction to specific topic or medium, while weekly classes will give you an in depth exploration over several weeks. Weekly class and Workshop information, dates, times, and locations will be available on the “Classes” page.

Who are the classes targeted to? Is it beginner-friendly? Will advanced students learn something?

Every skill level is welcome to learn. There are several different classes to accommodate students from beginner to more advanced. Robyn has close to a fifteen years of experience in the studio. Every tip, trick, and technique she has learned along the way is shared in the classroom. These can be applied to every level of artist.

Do I need to have prior experience to take a class?

We welcome anyone with a desire to learn. No prior experience is necessary.

How many students are in a class?

Weekly Classes are small in size ranging from 2-10 students.

How do I secure a spot in class?

Pre-registration is required. Payment of full tuition for that session is required at the time of registration in order to secure a spot. Deadline to register for classes is 2 business days in advance of the start of the class. Once you are registered for a class, you will receive an email confirmation with a zoom link for online classes.

If I miss a class, can I make it up? Is there a refund?

There are no scheduled make-up classes in the session. If you are unable to attend a class you can request a video of any demonstrations covered as well as detailed notes describing what we accomplished for you to make up any missed work on your own. You can also purchase a mentorship meet up for more guidance. Prorating of class is not permitted in most cases.

Do you offer any discounts?

We offer a 10% discount to any currently enrolled student who refers Protégé Art Studio to a friend who then enrolls in any program.

What is the class cancellation policy?

In the event of a cancellation, class will be rescheduled on the next available date. If none are available, students will be reimbursed. Prorating of class is not permitted in most cases. Additionally, there are no refunds if you cancel after the start date of the class or workshop.

Are there classes for my young child?

A large majority of our workshops are for anyone 12 years of age and older while Drawing on the iPad is for anyone 10 years and older. There is also a weekly Portfolio Development class for students in high school. If you are younger than the required age and want to take a class or workshop, please get in touch by contacting protegeartstudio@gmail.com. There are always exceptions!

What materials do I need to take this class?/ Where can I purchase supplies?

Upon registering for a class, a supply list will be emailed by the instructor. Supplies can be purchased at any art supply or craft stores. If you would like to purchase a supply kit for your class to be mailed directly to you, please contact protegeartstudio@gmail.com to make arrangements. Please allow at least one week before your class start date.

Can I draw/paint whatever I want or do I have to paint what the instructor is drawing/painting?

When teaching in person it is easier to facilitate student working on multiple subject matters at once. Therefore, in online classes students will be drawing/painting the same subject. Students will work at their own pace through guided lessons. If you are looking for guidance on a specific project, I would suggest considering the Mentorship Program.

When will the classes be available?

Weekly class and Workshop dates, times, and locations will be available on the “Classes” page. Weekly Sessions can last anywhere from 5 to 10 weeks and Workshops from 1 to 3 days. One on one mentorship meetings are scheduled with the individual mentor.
